Main duties of the research unit

Basic research in geodesy and geophysics is centred on observation, modeling and interpretation of the physical state and processes of the Earth system, furthermore elaboration and development of the theoretical basis and measurement tools. The main duties also include the operation of the Hungarian National Seismological Network and supporting services, continuous monitoring of the solid Earth and Earth’s environment (geodynamics, geomagnetism, aeronomy), operation of permanent and temporal observation systems and participation in international observation networks and cooperations. In connection with the basic research the institute contributes to the analysis of geological and geophysical natural hazards both on national and global level and assessment of the potential risk on European critical infrastructure.


Range of the GGI RCAES HAS’s duties according to its deed of foundation

  • Theoretical research and direct observations aimed at understanding the solid Earth and its surroundings (Earth’s internal structure and processes, its fields, Sun-Earth relations);
  • Development of scientific methods, instruments, measuring techniques and information systems;
  • Support for other institutes/organizations to solve geodetic and geophysical problems;
  • Continuous observations, data processing, international and national data service (seismology, geomagnetism, aeronomy, geodynamics);
  • Participation in the work and special programs of international organizations, fulfilment of duties in research and science policy associated with the international liabilities of Hungary;
  • Publication of scientific results, teaching, knowledge transfer towards the citizens of Hungary, organization of scientific conferences, meetings and workshops.



Brief introduction to the scientific programme of the GGI

Main intention of our institute is to be and remain a significant international center of basic research in geodesy and geophysics (geodynamics, physics of the planet Earth, seismology). Realization of the GGRI’s objectives is envisaged by preserving our efficient scientific topics, and their constant revival. Our programme for the next years is considerably based on the research directions defined and established decades ago. At the same time, the opportunities for international cooperation in Earth sciences have been considered as well. These are mainly the scientific activities aimed at the global understanding of the planet Earth and its surroundings and are related to the global environmental protection.

We are planning complex research projects for the investigation of deep structures of the Carpathian Basin within East Central Europe, the more accurate modeling of the ionospheric and magnetospheric structure and the seismological application of instruments commonly used in geodynamics by exploiting the opportunity involved in the cooperation of different disciplines pursued in our institute.

One of the most important tasks of the GGRI is the maintenance and operation of our observatory network. The majority of the Earth magnetic, ionospheric, geodynamical and seismological observations are digital. A primary goal of the next period is the substitution of the ever more expensive analogue data recording. The data processing and the publication of bulletin and annual reports should be updated accordingly.
