Seismology

Within the Geographical Institute of Royal Hungarian University in December 1905 Kövesligethy Radó founded the Seismological Observatory, which later on was a part of the Hungarian University of National Collections, the Pázmány Péter University, the Eötvös Loránd Geophysical Institute of Hungary and the Geophysical Department of Eötvös Loránd University and was known by different names (Budapest Seismological Observatory, National Seismological Observatory, National Seismological Institute. The last name was in use until 1970. the Seismological Observatory founded by Kövesligethi since 1971 is working within the Geodetic and Geophysical research Institute of the HAS. The department in the media is mentioned not only by his official name, but also as Seismological Observatory of HAS, Seismological Institute etc.

The Department beside it’s scientific tasks performs also state and social tasks:

  • Fast preliminary determination of epicentra and local magnitudes felt by the people.
  • Sends these preliminary information to the competent state authorities and delivers them also to the organs of the media.
  • The Department informs private persons on questions related to earthquakes.
